COSTA DE ALMERIA
Garrucha
Garrucha is an authentic fishing town. Fish is therefore the main
dish on the menus in the restaurants. With a lovely harbour and
beautiful esplanade for relaxing walks. Garrucha also has some
incredible monuments to visit, Saint Joaquin's Church, Ermita
del Carmen (chapel), Plaza del Ancla, Fisher's monument and the
Castle of Jesus Nazareno (16th century). Garrucha holds fiestas
every month of the year except for October and November.
Águilas
Águilas is a typical Spanish Village located in the Region
of Murcia but very near Andalucia. There are 36 beaches, but it
is only possible to swim at five: Clabardina, La Colonia, Levante,
Las Delicias and Prolong Poniente. There are sandy beaches with
crystal clear water, perfect for diving or fishing. In Águilas
the average temperature is 25°C. The Village has many museums
to visit. If you would like to see some of Águilas history
then visit the Roman thermal baths (1790). Other interesting places
to visit are the townhall, the casino, Plaza España, fish
harbour and the old mill.
San Juan de los Terreros
This is a very beautiful village on the coast of Andalusia. The
economy is tourism in the Summer and fishing during the Winter.
The place to visit here is Cala de la tía Antonia (Aunt
Antonia's cove), where you can see incredible rocks and caves.
A very special fiesta is celebrated here on the second Sunday
in May.
Carboneras
This is an ancient fish and mediterranean village with 6000 inhabitants
approx and now one of the most developed villages in Almería.
Here you will find excellent beaches and interesting places to
visit, for example, the Castle of San Andrés (from the
15th century), the Tower of Rayo (15th century), the Tower of
Mesa Roldán (17th century), Fuentes' House, Patio Andaluz
and the Labyrinth's House. Carboneras celebrate their local fiesta
between the 12 and 15th of June.
Mojácar
Mojácar is a small village next to the Mediterranean Sea.
Almost 6000 people live there and it benefits from many restaurants
and hotels. Mojácar has a 17 km long coast with amazing
beaches and interesting places to visit.Such as the Holy Mary
Church (1560), the observatory on Plaza Nueva which offers some
spectacular views, Ermita de los Dolores (17th century), the observatory
del Castillo and Puerta de la Ciudad.
You could arrange to visit some of the following local places,
Nature Reserve Cabo de Gata-Níjar, Sorbas' Caves or the
Desert of Tabernas, the only desert in Europe where you can see
the sets of the western films. The area is still a first choice
of location for many films, TV, commercials and video shots.
If you are interested in enjoying some of the local fiestas there
are a number held here. Romería de San Isidro (15th May.
Religious fiesta), Hogueras de San Juan (23rd June. Popular fiesta),
Moros y Cristianos (from the 4th to the 6th June. Art and Culture
fiesta), San Agustín (24th -29th August).
Vera
Vera is a tourist village, which offers culture, beautiful beaches,
an esplanade and a coastline that stretches 5km long. It is near
to the other tourist attractions of Mojacar, Garrucha and Los
Velez. With coves, large sandy beaches, with crystal clear and
clean water. Nominated with a blue flag, which is given by the
European Union to those beaches with the highest quality.
Almeria airport is close by and it also has its own bus station.
Vera has a rich and important history. It was the centre of many
battles and territory sharings. Many sites have been found from
the Neolithic and Bronze Age. Vera suffered from an earthquake
in 1518 and the village was completely destroyed.
Golf in Almeria
Practice your favourite sport in Almeria.
At the moment, there are several established golf courses in
the province of Almeria and many are under planning or construction.
Mojacar is a popular choice for golfers, as the 18-hole Club Marina
Golf Mojacar course is situated practically in the town centre.
An exciting new course is the Desert Springs, in Cuevas del Almanzora,
the only true desert course in Europe, built to US PGA standards.
There is also a good choice of challenging 9-hole golf courses.
Many new resorts boasting a great variety of sports facilities
are currently under construction, e.g. Almanzora Country Club
and Valle del Este.
